I stood outside Lane’s door, taking a deep breath to calm my nerves. I brought flowers for Lane and a book for Emery. I couldn’t think of anything else to bring.

As it was, the book was probably lame, Treasure Island, an old classic. I’d loved it as a boy, but Emery was a girl. I had no clue what girls would want to read. I wondered if I was being sexist by thinking in terms of boy books and girl books.

I knocked on the door. I heard footsteps running to the door. The door swung open, and the girl I’d met at the bakery looked at me, her eyes narrowed as she scrutinized me. Her eyes were hazel, like Lane’s, but her hair was blonder, like mine. She wore a ponytail that made her look sweet, even as her eyes had a mischievous glint.

“You’re mommy’s second boss.”

I knew then that Lane hadn’t told her the truth yet.

“Yes.”

Her gaze locked onto the flowers. “But you want to date her?”

“Emery, let him in.” Lane sounded exasperated. She appeared from a doorway that I took to be the kitchen. Her hair was up in a messy knot that my fingers itched to let loose.

Emery held the door open, and I stepped in. “Thank you for having me for dinner.” I gave Lane the flowers, and she looked at me with the same skepticism that Emery had. “I brought this for you. I don’t know if you enjoy reading. It was a favorite of mine—”

“Treasure Island.” Emery’s eyes widened. “This is about pirates and treasure?”

“Yes, and adventure.”

“Do people die?”

I looked at Lane, rethinking my choice of books. “Yes. A few.”

Emery’s eyes gleamed. “Can I go read it now, mommy?”

“In a minute. We need to talk to you.”

Emery rolled her eyes. “Why?”

“It’s important, Emery.” Lane sat down on the couch. “Come sit with me.”

Emery’s astuteness caught on that something was up. “What’s going on?” She sat next to Lane but looked up at me.

“Remember when I told you about your dad?” Lane started.

“Yes. You said you loved him but didn’t know his name or something lame like that.”

She loved me?

Lane cleared her throat. “Yes, well, I knew him as Joe.”

“And he was a Navy SEAL.” Emery looked at me like she was sizing me up to figure out if I could be a SEAL.

“Yes. But now he’s in security. His name is Archer Graves.”

Emery’s eyes narrowed. “That’s your name.”

I nodded. “I’m glad to finally meet you.” Did I hug her? Shake her hand? Jesus fuck I was out of my element.

“Where’ve you been?”

“I told you, honey, I wasn’t able to find him, remember?” Lane answered her. “But once I saw him again, I could tell him.”

I arched a brow at Lane’s adjustment of the truth.

A buzzer went off in the kitchen. “I’ve got to get that.” Lane left the room, leaving me alone with Emery. Sweat beaded down my back. I had no experience with kids. Especially with kids that had a reputation of scaring men away.
